OrthoCT Spine Team 1631307666

My Back is Out! Should I See a Spine Surgeon?

So many people suffer with all types of back pain, and it often gets in the way of doing simple daily activities or causes problems performing at work. OrthoConnecticut’s Spine Team is highly regarded as one of the finest in the region, and our physicians, Justin Paul, MD, PhD and Abiola Atanda, MD, care for patients of all ages with debilitating or simple spine issues. Contrary to what you may believe, the majority of spine patients are treated without surgery, and when surgery is required, the practice uses minimally invasive procedures whenever possible. Older adults commonly have age-related back, neck, and spinal pain or stiffness from cartilage, joints, and discs wearing down from everyday usage or losing water and shrinking as we age. Over time, we can also experience narrowing of the space around our spine, or spinal stenosis, which puts pressure on the spinal cord and/or spinal nerves causing symptoms ranging from pain, numbness, tingling to progressive loss of function. Spinal arthritis, also a degenerative condition, can occur when the joints above and below the vertebrae begin to degenerate. In addition to age-related wearing down of the disc and other tissues, this can result in an abnormal curvature of

OrthoConnecticut Now Offers Waterproof Lattice Mesh-like Arm Casts

OrthoConnecticut now offers Cast21 lightweight, waterproof, and comfortable lattice mesh-like arm casting in fun colors designed for an active lifestyle. This upgraded cast alternative is now available to our patients in the Danbury, Darien, Norwalk, Ridgefield, Southbury, and Westport offices. The many benefits of this innovative cast include no longer having to deal with a cast that is itchy, smelly, or uncomfortable, and does not need to be cut off with a saw (unlike traditional casting). As if being waterproof wasn’t enough of an advantage the fact that physicians no longer need a saw is a big plus for children (and adults) who can be apprehensive of the saw. What’s more is that Cast21 can be applied in as short a time as 3-minutes. It molds quickly and cures fast so our patients have a shorter, easier visit. The waterproof and breathable nature of the lattice structure also helps prevent infections and skin complications. We’re pleased that OrthoConnecticut patients can heal with a more comfortable option and still maintain an active lifestyle. No more needing to cover your cast with a plastic bag to bathe or sitting out summer pool parties. Cast 21 is a welcome addition to improving our patients

Randy Sealey: Green Card Stories

Excerpt as seen in Green Card Stories Randy Sealey breezed through the college applications for the nation’s top universities. He listed his student awards and honors. He wrote an essay about his dreams of becoming the first person in his family to attend college, and of becoming a doctor. But on each application, there was one question he left blank: Are you a citizen of the United States? He was sure his grandparents were working out his immigration status. It seemed like just a technical matter. He felt as American as his beloved New York Yankees. Read the full article here

Business Spotlight: Dr. Thomas Guglielmo

As seen in Litchfield.bz   Dr. Thomas Guglielmo, a podiatrist, is seeing patients at the OrthoConnecticut practice office in Litchfield. BZ photo After longtime Litchfield podiatrist Dr. Gary Shields retired last year, local residents who visited his office on Bantam Road had to find someone new to look after their feet. Turns out they didn’t have to go far. Shields’ patients have all been referred to OrthoConnecticut’s Dr. Thomas Guglielmo, located next door at 338 Bantam Road. “We’re caring for many of Dr. Shields’ patients,” said Dr. Guglielmo, who has been seeing Shields’ patients in Litchfield since last July. “Our patients are now mentioning us to friends, co-workers and family, so word of mouth has helped residents find the care they need locally.” Dr. Guglielmo is available to see patients in the Litchfield office on Tuesdays. He treats patients of all ages, from infants to senior citizens, and specializes in surgical and non-surgical management of conditions affecting the foot and ankle. Read the full article here

Fun facts from OrthoConnecticut as you carve your turkey

Originally published in Ridgefield’s HamletHub DID YOU KNOW … The skin on the palm side of our hand is very unique. It grows no hair.   It does not have the ability to tan. It is tough and durable, but also sensitive enough to discriminate between a quarter and a nickel in your pocket. The skin is anchored to the bone through an intermediate layer of fascia, which prevents the skin from sliding around like a rubber glove. Fingerprints provide friction to allow us to grasp and hold onto objects. These fun facts are just the tip of the iceberg. The OrthoConnecticut team of fellowship-trained, board-certified hand and wrist surgeons know the ins and outs of palms, fingers, wrists….you name it. So whether you need schooling on little known facts about your hand or skilled surgical proficiency, come to the experts. The Hand Center at OrthoConnecticut is ready to care for you.

Dr. Dunleavy discusses fitness for seniors in the Fall during Covid-19

OrthoConnecticut’s Dr. Dunleavy discusses how seniors can stay active and fit in the Fall, safely during Covid-19. As seen in “Fitness in the Fall” article (pages 1 and 4) from Golden Years Magazine, September 2020 issue: John P. Dunleavy, MD, FAAOS, an orthopedic surgeon for OrthoConnecticut, Danbury, treats many senior patients who are looking to stay active. “The first thing I say to patients is whatever you can do to stay active you should do, even if it’s only taking a little walk,” he said. “There’s no such thing as doing too little. If all they can do is walk around their neighborhood, that works. A lot of times walking on flat ground is much easier, so sometimes folks will go to the mall or the local high school track to avoid hills.” Activities that keep the joints moving without applying too much pressure are ideal, such as walking and swimming, Dunleavy continued. Taking an aquatic fitness class is a good option, he said, as “the water workouts reduce gravity’s effects and are easier on the joints.” Dunleavy recommended working out with a friend as part of a routine to help you stick with the exercises. “In a gym, elliptical

Fall Dog Walking

OrthoConnecticut’s Lessons of the Leash to Avoid Injury

As seen in Ridgefield’s HamletHub Walking Your Dog is a Healthy Way to Exercise, But Use Common Sense The beautiful New England fall weather brings out lots of leaf peepers and dog walkers. This year, the number of people bringing their dogs along for a walk while enjoying fall activities such as apple picking, hiking, or pumpkin picking has increased. Makes sense since many people have added a “COVID-19 dog” to their families recently. It is important for people to remember basic dog walking etiquette and technique to ensure walks remain healthy, fun and injury-free. It is easy to trip over something or get tangled in the leash and lose your balance if you are not careful. Emergency rooms have seen a rise in the number of visits related to dog walking, resulting in hip fractures, wrist or forearm breaks, tendon injuries of the hand/finger, skin tears, and bruises. According to a University of Pennsylvania Medicine Study, the number of such incidents jumped from 1,700 in 2004 to 4,400 in 2017, and we expect that 2020’s numbers will be significantly higher. Women over the age of 65 are at greater risk for fractures as their declining bone density makes them more

Preventing and Treating Injuries in Young Athletes

Good Sports: Preventing and Treating Injuries in Young Athletes BY ANDREA VALLUZZO as seen in Back to School, August 2020Hearst Connecticut Media Group Above, Dr. Edmund Ganal, a Ridgefield resident and sports medicine specialist with OrthoConnecticut, with locations throughout Fairfield and Litchfield counties, examines a young athlete’s knee. Sports are a big part of many students’ lives: Alessandro Sulpizi (at left), for example, is an avid athlete and former member of the New Canaan High School varsity boys tennis team under Coach Ben Young; he graduated from New Canaan High School in 2019 and currently attends Northeastern University. Whether or not students return to school this fall, odds are many of them will be participating in some type of athletic activity, whether that includes training for a sport, going for a run in their neighborhood, kicking the soccer ball around with their family at home, or preparing for a spring league. When kids are involved in sports — no matter what the scenario — athletic-related injuries are always a possibility. As student sports enthusiasts increasingly become year-round athletes, playing either one sport all year long or multiple sports, experts are reporting that the number of sports injuries is on the
