The ACL, which stands for anterior cruciate ligament, is the main stabilizing ligament inside the knee. Tears of this ligament usually occur from contact sports that involve twisting. Patients usually feel a pop, followed by swelling and pain.  An ACL tear must be diagnosed in the office. Treatment plans depend on the patient and the extent of the injury, but these tears may require surgical repair.
